Academics’ professional society meeting reimbursement requests due Sept. 6

Professional society meeting reimbursement requests for academics are being accepted for travel occurring July 1 through Dec. 31, 2021.

Deadline for online submission is Monday, Sept. 6, at 5:00 p.m. (Requests will be accepted electronically only, no exceptions)

The Academic Assembly Council (AAC) travel awards support travel to professional society meetings, primarily for the reporting and exchange of knowledge among members. Cooperative Extension academics are eligible for one meeting approval per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Academic Assembly Council approval is only for expense reimbursement from the Professional Society Meeting Fund. Leave with pay to attend the meeting must be approved by your immediate supervisor.

This call is for the bi-annual period of July 1 through Dec. 31, 2021. There will be a second call closer to the end of the calendar year for travel January 1 - June 30, 2022, and June.  The total amount of awards granted and the criteria for awards remain unchanged.

Applications are scored based on set criteria. Priority scoring is given to applicants new to their positions, presenting papers, or with special functions within the society/meeting.

AES faculty and UCCE specialists may apply for travel funds

ANR will be making additional travel support available for UC Cooperative Extension specialists to collaborate directly with UCCE advisors or REC directors in fiscal year 2021/22. 

With the level of funds available, each specialist may apply for up to $2,000 for FY 2021/22 (travel reports must be submitted within 30 days of travel, and funds must be expended by June 30, 2022). These travel funds must be used by the UCCE specialists only and cannot be used for out-of-state travel. Funding is not for the purpose of UCCE specialists presenting at or attending meetings. 

In recognition of the importance of the partnership between UC ANR academics and AES faculty, UC ANR is expanding the travel support program to include AES faculty as part of a pilot program. Upon completion of a request, UC ANR will support travel by AES faculty to meet and work with UC ANR county-based or REC-based academics. Support is limited to $1,000 per AES faculty member, with a cap on the total pool of funds available set at $25,000 for FY21/22 (funds must be expended by June 30, 2022). Additional support may be available through the campuses; AES faculty should consult their departments or colleges to determine if additional support is available. Travel support must be used by AES faculty members for their own travel to plan and execute research or present research findings at meetings hosted by UC ANR academics.

Completing a short online survey is the only step to apply for these funds.

While there is no deadline for applications for these travel funds they are first come, first awarded.  They also must be expended in the fiscal year 2021/22. Any travel completed toward the end of the fiscal year must be submitted and approved with the fiscal year, as no award will be carried forward.

New flu vaccine FAQs; travel funds available for UCCE specialists; Zoom changes

New flu vaccination FAQs
To support the health and well-being of UC students, faculty and staff and our communities, the University of California, in consultation with UC Health leadership, issued a systemwide executive order requiring all members of the UC community to receive an influenza immunization before Nov. 1, 2020.

In addition to protecting ourselves, this requirement is designed to avoid a surge of flu cases at health care facilities across the state during the unprecedented public health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

UC ANR has published Answers to frequently asked questions with information about how UC ANR will implement the executive order for our employees and workplaces.

Travel funds available for UCCE specialists
UC ANR will be making additional travel support available for UC Cooperative Extension specialists to collaborate directly with UCCE advisors or REC directors in fiscal year 2020-21.

These travel funds must be utilized by the UCCE specialists only and cannot be used for out-of-state travel. Funding is not for the purpose of presenting at or attending meetings.

Zoom changes
Starting Sept. 27, Zoom will require all sessions to have either a passcode or a waiting room where guests gather until admitted by the host (a waiting room is the default option). The change is part of Zoom's security improvements. Zoom has posted FAQs at https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360045009111.

 

Celebration corner
Congratulations to our colleagues who were honored at the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) Virtual Annual Session!

• Deepa Srivastava and the UCCE Tulare-Kings Nutrition Education team are the second place Western Region winners of the SNAP-ED/EFNEP award
• Mary Blackburn received the NEAFCS Hall of Fame Award
• Mary and her role on the CalFresh Healthy Living, CNAP in Alameda County are the 3rd Place Regional winner of the Community Partnership award. She has served in this role since 2006.

 

While we all continue to shelter in place, it's a good time to learn more about food safety. Erin DiCaprio, Assistant Cooperative Extension Specialist in Community Food Safety in the UC Davis Food Science and Technology Department, created an 11-module online series of her Food Safety Training for Master Food Preserver Trainees and partnered with colleagues at North Carolina State University to create nine peer-reviewed fact sheets answering COVID-19-related questions about takeout food, food safety, handling groceries and more.

Meeting and travel support provided to UC ANR academics

As mandated costs continue to outpace available funds, UC ANR is taking action to ensure financial prudence while continuing to devote our limited resources to our priorities. These include the approved systemwide merit program and the two UC ANR equity programs designed to improve the competitiveness of salaries for academics and staff, among other goals. Funding to plan programming targeted at achieving intended outcomes and impacts is also of high priority. Please see related programmatic funding updates below.

Program Team funding

• For FY 2019-20, UC ANR is providing funding for Program Team meetings, during which related Workgroups can also meet. These meetings provide the opportunity to network, share and learn. We ask that you prioritize your attendance at these meetings and be judicious in your expenditure of time and funds to participate. To find out about the meetings, check the Program Team meetings web page.
• Again this year, UC ANR program leadership will continue to solicit input on opportunities to improve our Strategic Initiative, Program Team and Workgroup structure and roles. Thanks to those who have provided valued input to date.

This travel support must be used by the AES faculty member for his/her own travel to plan and execute research. Additional support may be available through the campuses; AES faculty should consult their departments or colleges.

ANR funding opportunities/grants 

• For 2018-2020, UCANR will not be issuing a call for proposals for the ANR Competitive Grants Program nor the High-Risk/High-Reward Program, and the Matching Program is on hold. These funds are being redirected given the current budget situation.  
• UC ANR continues to accept submissions for the Opportunity Grants Program, which provides small amounts of funding to initiate and complete critical short-term research, outreach, or training efforts. Proposals are accepted at any time. For more information, see the web page.
